Ingredients

For the Base
  • 4 medium russet potatoes peeled and grated
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
For the Topping
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup cooked bacon crumbled
  • 1/4 cup green onions sliced
  • 1/4 cup sour cream for serving

Method

Prepare the Hash Browns
  1. Grate the peeled russet potatoes and place them in a bowl of cold water to remove excess starch. Let them soak for 10 minutes.
  2. Drain the potatoes and pat them dry with paper towels. In a large bowl, combine the grated potatoes, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
Cook the Hash Browns
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the potato mixture to the skillet, pressing it down firmly. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.
  3. Carefully flip the hash browns over and cook for another 5-7 minutes until both sides are crispy and golden.
Add Toppings
  1. Once the hash browns are cooked, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon evenly on top.
  2. Cover the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted.
Serve
  1. Remove the skillet from heat and garnish with sliced green onions.
  2. Serve hot with a dollop of sour cream on the side.
